Vertigo
Shot this image a few years back at the San Juan Bautista Mission while on assignment for The Pinnacle. I was covering the 50th anniversary of the filming of Alfred Hitchcock's movie Vertigo at the Mission. At some point during the painstakingly long event, I captured this image of a visitor watching two priests walk out of the mission after performing mass in honor of Alfred Hitchcock.

California 1950something.
Here are a few more Kodachrome slides from my Grandfather's collection. Most of these were probably taken around the time that he moved to California in '57 or '58.

Good Night, and Good Luck:
East Valley Tribune articleArizona Republic article
I was really disappointed, yet not at all surprised, yesterday when I heard that The East Valley Tribune would finally be closing it's doors after 118 years of publication. Was the economy to blame? Bad management? Probably a combination of both. Not the mention the refusal and subsequent floundering that newspapers have been experiencing when it comes to embracing the changes that technology and the internet have brought upon the industry. Sadly though, with it goes all the talented reporters, photographers, columnists and editors who make a difference and an impact on their surrounding community.

The Impossible Project
I'm sure most of you at least felt a hint of disappointment with the news last year that Polaroid had finally discontinued all production of their instant films and cameras - and I'm sure by now that many of you have heard of The Impossible Project and the team of 12 guys who are re-inventing instant film for use in vintage Polaroid cameras. Last week Polaroid announced that they will be re-launching some of their instant cameras for a limited run and commissioning The Impossible Project to produce film for these cameras. I have been following The Impossible Project for several months now and have been really about the prospect of being able to shoot my old sx-70's yet again. Be sure to support these guys and pick up a pack or two of instant film for your old (and no longer useless) Polaroid cameras in 2010. I'm sure that we can all agree upon keeping these guys in business for the years to come so we can keep shooting our Polaroids and keep the tradition of instant film alive for future generations.

60 Seconds: Cherries Jubilee
Yet more shots of classic cars from Cherries Jubliee: I shot these several years ago (2006 I believe) with my LAST 2 packs of Polaroid Time Zero film (which had already been discontinued at this point). I had been saving the film for a special occasion because after it's discontinuation prices for remaining packs of Time Zero had already sky rocketed to around $80.00 each (for 10 shots).

60 Seconds: Arizona
I recently came across some test shots that I took a few years ago in Arizona. The first two shots I was testing out my new/used SX-70 and time zero film:

These shots I was testing out a new Holga that came with a Polaroid back that I received from David for my birthday. I can't remember what film I was using but I believe it was the 667 made by Polaroid.

drivin' in the rain
I shot some video with the Digital Harinezumi earlier this week during that major storm that swept over the central coast. It was also a good opportunity to use my flexpod - which I was able to suction cup to my windshield and shoot footage with.

Snapshots
This last week I've actually carried my canon around with on the way to work, running errands, etc (I was really hoping to take some great storm shots but then got a little discouraged by the torrential downpour that lasted all day). All images were taken with the 50mm 1.4 lens. One of these days I'll step it up and get that 1.2 I've been longing for.

Forging On
There has been a serious lack of journalism in my life for the last year or so since all the layoffs at The Pinnacle. Here is a photo essay I did about the new forge that was built/refurbished at the San Juan Bautista Mission. This essay won honorable mention in last year's CNPA awards.
Bill Mohrmann watches the fire burn in the new forge that he built at Mission San Juan Bautista.
Bill Martinie checks to see that metal for a fire starter kit was forged properly by striking it against a piece of flint Jan. 5 in San Juan Bautista.
Smoke engulfs the blacksmith shop as Reb Monaco starts the fire in the new forge at Mission San Juan Bautista Jan. 5.
The fire burning in the new forge at Mission San Juan Bautista is reflected in Reb Monaco’s glasses while he controls the bellows.
Bill Martinie uses the anvil as a workbench to shape a piece of metal from the forge Jan. 5 in San Juan Bautista.
